What Are You? is an exploration of what it means to be multi-racial in America. Created and performed by Nicolette Emanuelle, who has roots in the Lumbee tribe of North Carolina, this original production delves into the complexities of racial identity through a blend of movement, music, and personal testimonies. Confronting the relentless question “what are you?” Nicolette weaves together striking and moving commonalities found in interviews with other multi-racial individuals, highlighting their unique struggles and the beauty of their identities. As you may know, I've had the pleasure of volunteering for the 501(c)3 non-profit Clowns Without Borders for the past five years. Our mission is simple: to bring relief through laughter. The work, however, is complex. We send professional artists—think acrobats, comedians, jugglers, and magicians—into war zones, refugee camps, regions affected by natural disasters, and communities affected by deep poverty. I've been serving on the board of Clowns Without Borders since 2020.

This year, we are expanding our work to support asylum seekers across the US. Your support will make a huge difference. We've been busy with shows and tours in Egypt, Turkey, Zimbabwe, and the US (Bay Area for homeless people). We've also supported artists in Gaza. We believe in the power of laughter. Could you help us share more laughs? Feel free to reach out if you have any questions. Hope to see you at our party!
Feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
Best,
Meredith

What Are You? is an exploration of what it means to be mixed-race in America.
Leading artist Nicolette Emanuelle began questioning why she had been asked “what are you?” for most of her life, leading to a deep exploration of how racial identity can imbue both a sense of community and feeling like an outcast.
Nicolette was raised with roots in the Lumbee tribe of North Carolina, and after interviewing other multiracial/multi-ethnic people, she found a wealth of common ground and a path forward in her own journey.
What Are You? captures the absurdity of America’s narrative on race and invites viewers to “check their boxes” and engage in vital conversation around multiracial/multiethnic people and their experiences. Featuring the talents of Meredith Gordon (AKA Squeeze the Clown) and aerial artist Jaylynn Haywood, this immersive performance will be premiering as part of Art on the Atlanta Beltline, combining aerial movement, shadow play, music, and personal testimonies to highlight the beauty and expose the struggles of multi-racial people while honoring their resilience.
